Evening Series 4
Tuesday 12th May 2009
Fine windy evening with superb views over the hills, attracted 10 riders to the fourth event of the Wheelers 2009 Evening Series.
Andrew Cutts, who borrowed his fathers' bike took the 10 points this week with another improvement in his personal best to 17'09" with a net handicap time of 11'54"
9 points and 2nd handicap went to Chris Exton another new rider to the club.
8 points and third handicap to John Woodhouse.
John Woodhouse is leading the points total at the moment with the father and son Cutts taking 2nd and 3rd respectively. Perhaps Dad won't be so keen to lend his bike to son in the next event.
Next week sees the wheelers travel to Brierley Common for their Hilly Championship, 4 laps round a tough 4 mile circuit for a 16 mile time trial, that sorts out the men from the boys.
Anybody who wishes to help us marshal the event get in touch with me as soon as possible.

Birdwell Wheelers Report 5-5-09
Tuesday 5th May 2009
The last few weeks have been a busy time for the Wheelers,Trevor Mayne rode what is likely to be the only stage race this year by a Birdwell Wheeler in the veterans' 3-day Tour of the Abberleys in Worcestershire over the Bank Holiday weekend. Despite riding strongly, he ultimately came away empty-handed due in part to bad luck. The opening stage was a hilly time trial over 4 miles in which he managed to stay in touch with the leading rider's times. Stage 2 was a road race over 45 miles in which Mayne was one of two riders who worked together to forge the biggest break of the day. But they were reeled in and the stage finished in a bunch sprint which did little to effect the leader board. Stage 3 also a road race, proved to be the defining stage. 4 riders got away early on and when 2 more riders attacked Mayne tried to join them but had to stop when 2 horses on the road were spooked bringing all but the leaders to a stop who went on to win the stage The deciding stage was a hilly, hard-fought road race, and many of the main contenders were dropped but any time gains Mayne made iwere not enough to lift him above 8th place overall. Despite coming second in his age category, Mayne finished the competition
frustrated at the turn of events.
In the A1 classic at Boroughbridge on a rolling 53 mile circuit Dave Scargill and Rodger Holmes had mixed fortunes. Scargill attacked from the gun into a headwind and forged a twenty second lead, joined a short time by two other riders they worked together for 50 miles to finish two minutes ahead of the bunch, Scargill managing third place in a close fought sprint and losing first place by inches.
Rodger Holmes in his first road race since being injured in a road crash was going strongly in the bunch until a pile up of riders forced the race to be cancelled. In the NMCF Pooled Clubs 25 mile time trial event at Hatfield Woodhouse had Trevor Mayne with a 58.28 lead the way followed by Paul Bennington 1.3.14 and John Woodhouse 1.8.42 Mayne was 2nd fastest of 52 riders in the event beaten to fast place by less than a minute.Jan Wilson was one of the timekeepers with Malcolm wilson pushing the riders off.
Meanwhile veteran riders Vic Fielding, Peter Knowles, Derry Dixon, Christine Minto, Dave Cutts and his 15 year old son Andy had an enjoyable day's ride cycling mostly on quiet roads and lanes to Sherburn before returning home via Askern.
In the Wheelers 2nd club event on a cool drizzly evening 16 riders braved the elements and some were rewarded well for their efforts.
1st handicap 10 points went to Rodger Holmes who wheeled out his good bike for the evening and was rewarded with a time of 14'55" knocking 1'16" seconds off his time last week.M
2nd handicap 9 points went to John Woodhouse who knocked 0'26" seconds off last weeks time.
3rd handicap 8 points went to Paul Heggie who knocked 0'33" seconds off his time.

Birdwell Wheelers Thurgoland 5 #3
Tuesday 5th May 2009
11 riders braved the inclement weather on Tuesday 5/05/09 for the Birdwell Wheelers Evening Series Event 3 Time Trial. The Gods conspired against us, and in the time window in which the event should have taken place, threw heavy rain backed by a severe crosswind at us.
In the interest of safety the event was cancelled, but on my way home, the sun came out and the whole evening changed in front of my eyes, These things are sent to try us.
The available points will be shared between the riders who turned up, and we hope the weather will improve for our next event on the Thurgoland course, Tuesday the 12th of May.
